The Headland
DUNGENESS, KENT.
In the far southern corner of Kent lays the headland of Dungeness, one of Europe's largest expanses of shingle. A special place with a unique wild landscape, its big skies spread clear to the horizon; a view only interrupted, almost surreally, by the imposing concrete of the Dungeness B nuclear power station.
I have found myself wondering this strange and photographically addictive landscape many times. With its changeable light and weather, the broad beach stretches far out, its cobbles and stones peppered with the remains of human activity, machines, tracks and isolated buildings. Some occupied by fishermen, whose boats both functioning and abandoned lay scattered on the beach. In the distance, projecting from the horizon are various strange structures some repurposed as dwellings others looming like a dystopian dream that all cumulate in a distinct and otherworldly feel.
